J&T Live Recording Template for Reaper
J&T Live Recording Template for Reaper
In an era when live recording is now essential, there is hardly a moment where live events do not need to be captured. This Reaper template will help prevent missed captures, poor archives, and the frustrations that come from learning a new DAW. For years, the live sound industry has relied on the ease of use of Waves’ Tracks Live for multitrack capture for virtual soundcheck, post-production mixes, and archives. With the shift to Reaper as the qualified live recording and playback software via SoundGrid driver, it forced a shift to learn a brand new and more complex software. This is the result of a desire to take advantage of all of the power, speed, and flexibility Reaper has to offer.
This is primarily a template for MacOS but can be adapted to Windows.

Features
-
Record
This template is equipped with a streamlined user interface that gives you visible metering in track and mixer mode to let you quickly know where your record levels are sitting.
We have added global Arm and Unarm buttons to ensure you do not accidentally skip over a track that you meant to arm for recording.
There is also a dedicated “Record” button that does just a little bit more than start recording. We called it Safe Record It will also clear the time selection and turn off loop mode to make sure you do not accidentally have a recording stop at the end of a time selection you were using during virtual soundcheck.
-
Playback
One of the biggest issues with the default version of Reaper is having to manually patch the inputs and outputs for any sort of multichannel playback or virtual soundcheck. Our template features an ADD TRACK button that allows you to add any number of tracks that will auto-patch both the input and output to your selected audio device.

Archive
For those of you who need to record well labeled tracks and do not want to spend time labeling every single channel, we have added button called CSV import that allows you import a CSV export of your input list to create auto-named tracks that will automatically patch the inputs and outputs 1:1
If you do not have an existing patch or are not sure how to create a compatible CSV, we have included a guide and template to create one.

Hotkeys
With Pro Tools being the industry-standard in the studio, a lot of engineers are used to the non-customizable hotkeys that Avid has continued with for years. Reaper on the other hand has a lot of seemingly intuitive hotkeys but can get incredibly frustrating when you are used to Pro Tools. We have overhauled the hotkeys in reaper to more closely match Pro Tools such as Cmd+= to open the mixer, “r" and “t'“ to zoom in and out, Cmd+Opt+[ or ] to zoom in and out on waveforms, and we even assigned Cmd+Space to be our very own Safe Record. See below for more info on hotkeys.
FAQ's
I thought Reaper was free. Why should I pay for a template?
Reaper is actually not free. Whenever you first launch Reaper, they even tell you so. The generous developers at Cockos have been so kind to still allow you fully “evaluate” the software even without a license so that if for whatever reason you have a show or recording session that is mission critical, you won’t ever be without a functioning DAW. Please do your part and support the great people at Cockos so that they can keep up their incredible work.
As for this template, it is not essential to have the functionality and simplicity provided by J&T. However, the audio engineers behind this template have a long history of recording live events. They have found what works and what doesn’t when it comes to capturing a live performance. This template brings all of that experience into your record machine to provide you with a straightforward, functional, and further customizable live recording experience.
What if I want to use Reaper to multitrack with Eclipse and also mix with a more traditional DAW layout?
One benefit of reaper is that you can easily swap between the visual themes under the options menu. This allows you to swap between layout types for tracking, mixing, mastering, or whatever suits you best. If you get lost or stuck in a bind and want to default to the factory Reaper theme, you can always go back to the default theme.
What makes Reaper and this template any better than using “X” DAW?
In terms of sound quality? Nothing. Any DAW with the right specifications can result in a great recording. There are so many options available at a wide range of costs. This template was built as a result of Waves’ Tracks Live software being discontinued. The team at J&T loved the simplicity and ease of use of Tracks Live. With Waves announcing that Reaper is the qualified recording software for Waves SoundGrid recording, the team set out to take advantage of the customization within Reaper to make it more powerful than Tracks Live was yet just as easy to use.
You said this was supposed to be straightforward. Why are there so many settings?
Reaper is an extremely customizable DAW that allows for so many options. Due to this being a template and not a standalone software, the end user has to still work within the functionality and menus of Reaper at its core. Please follow each step provided in the Eclipse install package to replicate all of the functionality we have compiled. If you have any issues, please contact us.
Can you customize a template specifically for my needs?
Of course! There is so much functionality and customization that did not make sense to include in the released version because it would be too specific to a certain set up. This certainly does not stop the team from dreaming up wild ways to use Reaper. Please send us an email with your setup specifications and your ideas. The team would love to help you make it possible.
